Why does secret giving act as a spiritual lens?

Matthew 6: 1 – 4

Listen to Message on MP3

Other than tithing to the church, what is your preferred personal charity, and why are they your favorite?

Why does Jesus argue that it is vital for our spiritual disciplines in general to be practiced with a level of secrecy?

How does it make sense that we should practice these disciplines as secretly as we can, yet at the same time be a “city on a hill” as he described back in chapter 5?

What kinds of rewards do you suspect Jesus is referring to in this passage considering the context of the entire sermon?

Why does Jesus assume that his disciples will be giving to those who are in financial need?

In the city, you can be asked to help someone in need nearly every hour of your day. How do you go about setting healthy boundaries that ensure you are generous with what you have, yet also ensure that you are not enabling behavior that is hurtful to the person who is receiving?

Imagine you are someone on the street observing the commotion of a hypocrite publically donating to charity.  What goes through your mind as you are watching them?

Imagine you are one of the people benefitting from this gift that is being trumpeted to everyone around. What does this public announcement do to your dignity?

Why do so many charities today go to such great lengths to recognize those who give?

Why is it particularly important to Jesus that our charitable giving is done privately and discreetly?

Don’t answer this question aloud, but who is someone you could directly help this week through discreet giving?

How much do you “hunger and thirst” after helping those who are in need?

How does a person go about building more private integrity and generosity into their lives?
